I am working part-time
(This section covers both permanent part-time working and temporary part-time working - TPT)
If you work part-time we will still use the Basic pension calculation but we will use your full-time pensionable salary and we will pro rate your Pensionable Service according to your part-time hours. So, for example, if you have worked for 20 years at half hours (i.e. on a 50% contract) we will use 10 years of service in the pension calculation, or if your part-time pensionable salary is £5,000 we will use £10,000 in your Retiring Pay calculation.
If you are moving from full-time to part-time or changing your part-time hours, we will use the full-time equivalent of pay and pro-rated service according to your part-time hours for each period of service. For example:
Hours worked (Ground staff) | Length of service |
Pensionable
salary |
Salary used in Retiring Pay calculation | Service used in pension calculation |
---|---|---|---|---|
5 days a week (37.5 hours) | 10 years | £20,000 | £20,000 | 10 years |
3 days a week (60% contract or 22.5 hours) | 10 years | £12,000 | £20,000 | 6 years |
2 days a week (40% contract or 15.0 hours) | 10 years | £8,000 | £20,000 | 4 years |
Hours worked (Flying staff) | Length of service |
Pensionable
salary |
Salary used in Retiring Pay calculation | Service used in pension calculation |
---|---|---|---|---|
Full time (30 hours) | 10 years | £20,000 | £20,000 | 10 years |
75% contract (22.5 hours) | 10 years | £12,000 | £20,000 | 7.5 years |
50% contract (15.0 hours) | 10 years | £8,000 | £20,000 | 5 years |
If you have any periods of working on a temporary part-time basis under the Company's Business Response Scheme (BRS), your pensionable service will also be reduced. For example, if you work on a TPT basis for five months, working 80% of your normal, full-time hours, and then return to full-time working for the next seven months, your pensionable service for the year would be:
- 5 months x 80% = 4 months
- 7 months full-time = 7 months
- Total pensionable service = 11 months (or 91.6% of one year)
It is important to note that BA does not make up your pension contributions to the full-time rate and you do not have the option of making up any shortfall in your contributions to make your period of TPT count as full-time pensionable service.
ClosePlease note that if you work part-time, the death in service lump sum benefit of three times the elements of your pay that British Airways deem to be pensionable would be based upon your part-time pay. Your Adult Survivor's pension is calculated as two thirds of your Basic pension calculation, and Dependent children's pensions are one sixth of your Basic pension calculation.
