Can I take a partial transfer out of my NAPS pension and leave the rest within the Scheme?
Members of NAPS who have a deferred pension entitlement which was built up over two or more specified periods.
CloseNAPS pensions are generally made up of three main portions, built up over the following periods:
- Pension earned before April 1997*
- Pension earned between April 1997 and April 2007
- Pension earned after April 2007
A NAPS member who has a deferred pension which was built up during two or more of these periods has one opportunity to make a partial transfer out before drawing or transferring out their remaining Scheme benefits at a later date.
* In all cases, any pension earned before April 1997 must be included in a partial transfer out.
Examples:
Partial transfer option available:
- A member who joined the Scheme before April 1997 (or has transferred in pension for before April 1997) and left the Scheme after April 2007 can choose to transfer out just the portion of pension earned before April 1997. The member can also choose to include the portion earned or transferred in between April 1997 and April 2007 or the portion earned or transferred in after April 2007, or leave one or both of these later portions in the Scheme (subject to a minimum transfer value of £30,000).
- A member who joined the Scheme after April 1997 and left the Scheme after April 2007 can choose to transfer out just the portion of pension earned or transferred in between joining and April 2007, leaving the portion earned after April 2007 in the Scheme (subject to a minimum transfer value of £30,000).
Partial transfer option not available:
- A member who joined and left the Scheme before April 1997 can only transfer the portion of pension earned before April 1997 so this would be a full transfer out and not a partial transfer out as there would be no portions of pension left in the Scheme.
- A member who joined the Scheme after April 1997 and left the Scheme before April 2007 can only transfer the portion of pension earned between April 1997 and April 2007 so this would be a full transfer out and not a partial transfer out as there would be no portions of pension left in the Scheme.
The option allows NAPS members one opportunity to make a partial transfer out before drawing or transferring out their remaining Scheme benefits at a later date.
CloseThe partial transfer out option is subject to portion of pension being transferred out having a transfer value of £30,000 or more.

CloseYes – the whole of the remaining pension can be transferred out at any time before the earlier of the member reaching age 75 or drawing their pension benefits from the Scheme.
CloseThe Scheme provides a separate option which allows members with AVCs to transfer some or all of them to another pension arrangement independently of their Scheme pension to another approved pension arrangement. Full details of this option are included in our AVC-only transfer out pack, which is available on the "Forms" page of our website.
CloseYes – the benefits paid from the Scheme if you die may include a pension for an adult survivor (your legal spouse, civil partner or surviving dependant) and allowances for children under age 23.
