How is my deferred pension worked out?

Your deferred pension is worked out at date of leaving as a percentage of your salary, based on the years, months and days that you've been a member of the Scheme (your Pensionable Service), adjusted for any changes in your BA occupations prior to 1 April 2007 (such as a move from Flying Staff to Ground Staff), plus any service you transferred into the Scheme.

(your Pensionable Service x Retiring Pay) = Your basic pensionĀ
Build-up rate

You can leave your pension with BA or transfer it elsewhere.

  • Your deferred pension is due to be paid from Normal Retirement Age (age 55 for Flying Staff and age 60 for Ground Staff), or you can choose to draw a reduced pension from the age of 55 or even earlier if you become too ill to work.
  • Your NAPS deferred pension receives increases in accordance with Scheme Rules for the period of deferment.
  • Any Additional Voluntary Contributions (AVCs) you saved stay in the fund and continue to build-up with investment income until you draw your deferred pension. You can continue to change your AVC investment choices at any time by filling in an AVC Investment Switch form.
  • You can transfer the value of your deferred pension, including any AVCs saved, to another pension Scheme approved by HM Revenue and Customs

If, prior to leaving, you elected to cease paying contributions and crystallise your pension on or after reaching your current Normal Retirement Age, your pension will also depend on the actuarial, late retirement increases that are applied to your crystallised pension.

Your pension is worked out on the basis of your membership of NAPS up to 31 March 2007 and then your membership of Plan 65 or Plan 60 from 1 April 2007. An outline of the two different calculations is shown below.

Pre 2007 pension (for service up to 31 March 2007)

Your Pre 2007 service pension is worked out as a percentage of your Pensionable Salary at your old Normal Retirement Age (age 55 Flying Staff, age 60 Ground Staff) based on the years, months and days that you were a member of the Scheme up to 31 March 2007 (your Pre 2007 Pensionable Service).

Your Pre 2007 basic pension:

Pensionable Service to 31/03/2007 x Retiring Pay at old Normal Retirement Age
52 build-up rate (Flying Staff) or 56 build-up rate (Ground Staff)

If you paid higher contributions to have your pension worked out on a faster Build-up rate, we will use this Build-up rate for the period during which you paid for the faster rate.

The pension resulting from any service up to 31 March 2007 will have been worked out at the earlier of your original Normal Retirement Date (55 for Flying Staff, 60 for Ground Staff) or date of leaving NAPS. Late retirement increases will then be added to this pension for the period from your old Normal Retirement Age until you actually draw your pension. Your Pre 2007 pension must be drawn at the same time as your Post 2007 pension.

Post 2007 pension (for service from 1 April 2007)

If you left the Scheme after 1 April 2007, your Post 2007 pension is worked out as a percentage of your Pensionable Salary at retirement, based on the years, months and days that you paid contributions to the Scheme from 1 April 2007 (your Post 2007 Pensionable Service).

Your Post 2007 basic pension:

Pensionable Service from 01/04/2007 x your Retiring Pay at retirement
75 build-up rate

For service up to 1 October 2010 the default build-up rate was 60.

If you chose to pay more, or less, than the standard contributions to build up your pension at a faster rate after 1 October 2010 (e.g. 1/67 or 1/60) or slower rate (available from 6 April 2016 - e.g. 1/83 or 1/130), we use that rate for any period during which you paid for the faster, or slower, rate.
